Ferrrymead Rotary is supporting increased awareness and understanding of the ŌtakaroAvon Heathcote Estuary by providing teachers with new educational resources focused on the wetland of international significance.
Ferrymead and Linwood Rotary clubs have jointly funded the development of a comprehensive teaching package designed for classroom use.
The resource includes curriculum-linked activity ideas, a detailed field trip guide, Estuary information booklets, bird identification guides, estuary-themed storybooks, and other supporting materials.
The package was developed by Ferrymead Rotary life member Tanya Jenkins, an environmental education consultant with 25 years' experience in producing educational resources for teachers.
After successful trials in several local schools, 11 schools in the estuary catchment area have now received the package at no cost, with staff reportedly expressing their appreciation.
A further four schools in close proximity to the estuary are also set to receive the material in coming months
